Kenyan Who Stole From US Government Jailed

Jeffrey Sila Ndungi, 32, has been sentenced by a Texas court to 10 years in jail and fined Sh25 Million for stealing from the US Government.

He was accused of stealing Sh7.7 Million through cheques issued on federal income tax returns filed electronically from Kenya.

According to investigators, on August 9, 2016, he presented a treasury cheque to an undercover agent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - the American equivalent of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) - in exchange for Sh4.8 Million.

Justice Jane Boyle found Ndungi guilty of two counts of theft of public funds and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Ndungi's trial lasted for three days.

Ndungi, who owns two small planes in Kenya, was convicted in September 2017 but sentenced in January.

He had been arrested at Los Angeles Airport in California trying to flee the country after attempting to defraud the US Treasury.

At the time of his trial, he was in the US on a tourist visa and was denied bail for being a flight risk.

Ndungi will serve the 10-year sentence at Dallas Prison.

He is the registered owner of two Cessna planes; a 2-passenger and a 4-passenger currently parked at Nairobi's Wilson Airport.
