Jimi Wanjigi's Father, Maina Wanjigi, Defies Court Order

Billionaire businessman Jimi Wanjigi's father, Maina Wanjigi, was on Sunday summoned to appear in a Nyeri court on Monday, March 5, to face charges of failing to secure his weapon.

However new details have emerged that the former Agriculture cabinet minister will not appear in court as ordered.

His lawyer Kiogora Mugambi disclosed that his client's failure to fulfill the obligation was because he (Maina) had recently undergone surgery which he was recovering from.

He added that Wanjigi Senior could not travel to Nyeri as he was still recuperating.

In a recent development, the former minister on Monday sued the state seeking to stop the possible prosecution in relation to firearms recovered from his son's house last year.

Earlier on Sunday, Mzee Maina was ordered to take a plea in the case.

“Your attendance is necessary to appear in Chief Magistrate Court at Nyeri to take a plea in a criminal case number 253 of 2018 on a charge of failing to keep safe custody of a firearm as read with Firearms Act,” part of the summon stated.

Earlier on Thursday, Jimi failed to appear in court after being served with an order by a contingent of armed police officers at Museum Hill, Nairobi.

Representing Wanjigi, counsel Mugambi told Chief Magistrate Wendy Kegendo that Wanjigi would not appear before the Nyeri court until the charges leveled against him were made public.

Wanjigi's legal team requested the charge sheet and sought deferment of taking the plea to a later date as they maintained they didn't know the nature of the accusations.

Kiogora further told the court the right procedure was not followed when serving his client with the orders hence he failed to show up.

The prosecution, however, refuted the allegations arguing that Wanjigi was aware of the charges he was facing.
