IEBC Sets Date for Migori Senate By-Election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set October 8 as the date for the Migori Senatorial by-election.

This comes following the June 19th death of Senator Ben Oluoch at MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi where he succumbed to throat cancer.

Several people have so far expressed interest in replacing Okello as Senator of Migori.

Among them are former Migori Gubernatorial candidate Ochillo Ayacko, Okello's son Willis, former ODM county chairman John Magaiwa, journalist Matiko Bohoko, and businessman Solomon Hodo.

Ayacko withdrew his petition challenging the election of Okoth Obado as Governor on Wednesday, fuelling speculation that he was set to go for the Senatorial position.

He asserted that he made the decision to withdraw the case after ODM party leader Raila Odinga intervened in the matter.

"I have decided to withdraw the petition. My lawyers have already sent a letter to Mr Obado's lawyers communicating my intention. The same letter has been copied to the Court of Appeal," Ochillo confirmed.

The deceased Senator's family had also asked that ODM hand the ticket to Okello's eldest son Willis.

Willis stated that he was ready to make a reality the vision his father had.

"Migori people gave my father a five-year contract. He had a vision to achieve which I’m ready to (fulfill)," he stated.
