Nineteen Nigerians Arrested Leading Online Crimes in Nairobi

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Saturday morning arrested nineteen Nigerian nationals engaging in online crimes in Nairobi.

Confirming the arrests through a statement sent a few hours after the arrests, the DCI stated that the criminals were using social media to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans.

A number of the suspects live in Umoja, Roysambu and Kasarani Estates in Nairobi.

DCI warns that the fraudsters start by befriending Kenyans on social media, mostly on Facebook.

Immediately after establishing the friendship online, they initiate a friendly chat that ends in promises of delivering goodies to the enthusiastic locals.

The gang lies to the online users that the promised items would be sent through DHL to the local airport.

DHL is one of the leading international courier service providers.

"The following day a call will be made and someone will pretend to be an attendant at the DHL office. They will tell the victims to pay clearance fees for the same parcel they claim to have sent you to the airport," reads the alert by the DCI.

Immediately after sending money through Mpesa, another call is made to the sender requesting for some more money for other documentation and taxes.

After receiving all the money, the conmen demanded would then ignore all calls as the victims proceed to demand for the parcel having paid for all the charges required.

It is at this point that one realises they had lost their money to fraudsters.
