CGTN Journalist Saddique Shaban Nearly Assaulted Filming Accident Scene

China Global Television Network (CGTN) journalist Saddique Shaban was on Monday nearly beaten by irate residents as he filmed them illegally fetching petrol from a tanker that had overturned.

Narrating the incident on his social media, the sports editor expressed his concern about how Kenyans readily risked their lives to get a jerrican of the commodity despite the obvious dangers.

"I nearly got assaulted filming the scene. People may never live to see the consequences of their mistakes. But for the Kenya Police, lack of strategy and decisive action in such situations in criminally negligent," he lamented.

Saddique further faulted the officers on the ground for not cordoning off the scene of the accident.

Here is the video:

He described the officers as being overwhelmed and looking on helplessly as people dangerously scooped fuel.

"Fully armed, police officers know they cannot discharge their weapons. No dog units to keep looters at bay. No firefighters from Nakuru County on location hours after an accident. Someone is making a phone call right next to the spilt fuel. Free for all affair.

"Kenyans never learn. Their greed for freebies is the reason many die on the road. Not even a threat of an explosion could deter their quest to scoop fuel from an overturned tanker," he added.

There have several reports of Kenyans rushing to accident scenes to loot goods, some resulting in tragedies.

Back in 2009, a fuel tanker overturned at Sachangwan trading centre along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

It later burst into flames as residents flocked to the scene to collect fuel. A total of 110 people lost their lives.
