Plan by PSC to Surcharge MPs Who Waste Taxpayer’s Money

Members of the National Assembly, government officials and other state officers will now pay for wasting or losing taxpayers money.

The Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) has directed all clerks in the Senate and The National Assembly to enforce a report that demands all individuals who fail to show up for events paid for by taxpayers money to be surcharged.

These funds included the air tickets, meals and accommodation payments already made by the state.

This is after the commission noted that MPs and other guests they have paid to attend the events, have abused it by accepting and then not showing up to the events.

PSC noted that once such payments are made, it becomes impossible for the government to secure refunds hence wastage.

According to The Star, the law has been around for a while but the Commission has now intensified efforts to enforce it.

"Yes, we are under strict instructions to adhere to the circular failure to which we will be held responsible.

"The circular has been there but now with austerity measures being put by all arms of government, we are strict now," a senior officer told The Star.

This is an effort by PSC to raise money after 600 million funding was scrapped from the Supplementary budget allocation passed last week.

The 67 Senators in the country had initially passed to spend Ksh. 1.5billion in foreign and domestic travel before the scrap.

This move is implemented in an effort to step misuse of public funds by MPs and Senators in the country as inflation soars.
