IG Boinnet Reveals Unknown Details on Fort Ternan Bus Accident

Inspector General (IG) of police Joseph Boinnet on Thursday revealed unknown details on the fatal Fort Ternan bus accident that claimed 56 lives.

Addressing the Transport Committee in the National Assembly, the IG indicated that there were no traffic police roadblocks between Nairobi and Kericho on the fateful night.

"It is not true that there were 15 roadblocks between Nairobi and Fort Ternan, there were no roadblocks at that time," the IG stated.

The Nairobi-Kericho road usually has several roadblocks including at Lower Kabete, Kinoo, Karai, Naivasha, Gilgil, Nakuru near Pipeline, Solio, Salgaa, and Mau Summit.

"We have been under a lot pressure from KEPSA that the number of roadblock on our highways impede business," he added.

His remarks came as the legislators raised concern over possible failure by police to curb the road carnage.

The Committee put the IG under intense pressure seeking to know the circumstances that have led to increase in road accidents in the past one year.

In his response, Boinnet informed the Transport committee that most of the rising cases of accidents in the country are caused by human error.

There were calls by members of the public to have the police who were on duty along the route prosecuted alongside the owners and management of the ill-fated bus.

Survivors narrated how the bus was recklessly driven between Naivasha and Fort Ternan, a matter that would have been addressed to police officers manning roadblocks along the route.
