Former Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo Dies

Former Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo passed on Tuesday morning at a Nairobi hospital.

Reports indicate that he died at Mbagathi Hospital.

Prison boss Isaya Osugo confirmed the incident and revealed that Gakuo had fallen on Monday morning.

"It is unfortunate that we have lost him.

"We are still waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain what might have killed him," stated Osugo.

The body had since been moved to the City Mortuary.

The ex-official was serving a three-year term at Nairobi West Prison since May over Ksh 283 million cemetery land scam.

Following the sentence by Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, Gakuo, together with former Permanent Secretary Sammy Kirui, had been further fined Ksh 1 million.

Ogoti ruled that the prosecution proved that Kirui and Gakuo were aware that the tender documents were false but did nothing to stop the misuse of the funds.

"It was a clear case. Only them know why they acted the way they did and failed to stop embezzling of public funds.

"I find them guilty and are convicted accordingly," stated Ogoti.

Gakuo had earlier been appointed as the co-chair of the Nairobi Regeneration committee after the resignation of former Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe.
