Furious Tuk Tuk Operator Explains Why He Beat Up Police

The furious tuk-tuk operator, who was recorded engaging in a scuffle with two police officers from Nakuru County, has come out to disclose the reason behind the fight.

In an interview with reporters from KTN, the rider who requested anonymity stated that he was acting out of defence after one of the officers smashed his side mirror and windshield.

He divulged, “Saa ile mimi nakuja, huyo afande mweusi aliinua ile rungu yake juu akaungukia kioo yangu ikaanguka, side mirror ikaanguka (While I was driving, the dark-skinned policeman raised his baton and smashed my windshield and my side mirror)."

He told journalists that the officer started the brawl that left him nursing bruises on his arm and neck when he sort to know why the officers damaged his tuk-tuk.

Dereva akaweka tuktuk yake kando akarudi nyuma aonge na askari, wakati alirudi nyuma askari akarudi kungoa insurance, dereva wa tuk tuk kumuuliza nini inaendela, hapo ndio vita ilianza (The driver parked his tuk tuk and stepped out to talk to the policeman, when he did the officer removed the insurance sticker. When the driver enquired what was happening, a fight broke out)," explained an eyewitness. 

The driver of the public service vehicle stated that he was in hiding after he got reports that DCI detectives were searching for him.

Other operators from the area faulted the traffic officers for harassing motorists even after they had complied with regulations.

Nakuru Central OCPD Samuel Obara has asked the operators to co-exist and work together with the authorities by treating each other with respect.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has vowed to take action on the rider who also wants the two officers investigated.

The video that went viral showed the operator dragging one officer to the ground before the latter hurled stones at him in retaliation.
