'The Star' Director Speaks on Shutting Down the Newspaper

'The Star' newspaper director William Pike on Sunday addressed reports on shutting down the media outlet.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, William refuted the claims that the Radio Africa Group owned publication is headed for shutdown terming the reports as false.

On his part, the newspaper's Editor Oliver Mathenge declined to comment on the matter referring us instead to the CEO.

Reports by Business Today alleged that The Star Publication Ltd is headed for closure due to diminished revenue.

The low revenues were reportedly linked to a failure by the Government Advertising Agency (GAA) to pay for ads placed in the paper.

According to the report, GAA owed Radio Africa Group/The Star Publication Ksh 423 million in ad debts as at June 2018.

The publication reportedly has not remitted membership contributions for its staff to Queensway Sacco pointing out to a cash crunch.

The reports came a day before the Head of Content at the publication David Makali exited the media house following a decision not to renew his contract.

Equally, the Chief Operating Officer Caroline Mutoko was also reassigned as general manager, which is considered to have been a demotion.

The Government Advertising Agency owes media houses an estimated Ksh2.5 billion by failing remit ad payments.

This has seen media houses struggle on managing day-to-day activities including hiring and expansion programs hence making it impossible for the fresh graduates in journalism to have a realistic chance of getting a job.
