New School Curriculum Rollout Begins

The government, on Thursday, kicked off the rollout of the new 2-6-3-3 curriculum countrywide.

Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education Belio Kipsang revealed that the Government, on January 1, distributed 12.5 million books to the public primary schools.

He further explained that 7.8 million of the books were for the Grade Literacy, popularly known as “Tusome”.

4.35 million others were for the Early Grade Mathematics for grade two and three pupils.

The textbooks are aligned to Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) that the Government has rolled out in grades one to three from the 2019 calendar year,” stated Kipsang.

The PS also directed that the distribution of English and Kiswahili books to commence immediately.

He further revealed that 23 million books, in line with the new curriculum, had successfully been distributed to schools countrywide.

The Government is implementing the new curriculum in association with United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Under the 2-6-3-3 system, grade one to nine will mean primary school and grade 10 to 12 will mean secondary learning.

In December, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed postponed the full implementation of the new curriculum to 2020 from the earlier schedule of 2019 before rescinding the decision.
