Nairobi County Officer Fined Ksh750K for Demanding Ksh3K Bribe

Tough times hit a Nairobi County Askari (officer) after he was hit with a Ksh 750,000 fine for reportedly demanding a Ksh 3,000 bribe.

The suspect, Joshua Okanga, was also charged with soliciting and receiving a bribe and also for obstructing and concealing of evidence.

Failure to settle the fine may as a result see the suspect a five-year jail term.

"In default, the suspect will serve five year imprisonment for soliciting and receiving a bribe, obstruction and concealing of evidence.

"The suspect had demanded a bribe of Kshs. 3,000," read a statement from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

This comes just days after a Malindi Senior Principal magistrate Silvia Wewa handed out an 8-year jail term to a man accused of bribing a police officer with Ksh 2,000.

Joseph Charo Dzombo was also given a Ksh 500,000 fine option for allegedly offering the bribe to a police officer to secure the release of a drug trafficking suspect.

He was declared guilty of the crime sated to have been committed on January 10, 2016.

“We find that the accused was trying to abuse the trust bestowed by the people on the public officers who were on duty,” ruled the magistrate.
