Cuban Doctors Abducted by Al Shabaab in Mandera

Two Cuban doctors, Assel Herera Correa (General Physician) and Landy Rodriguez (Surgeon), based in Kenya were on Friday abducted by suspected Al Shabaab militants in the middle of Mandera Town.

According to emerging reports, the militants further gunned down a police officer who was guarding them before disappearing with the two.

The three, and another police officer, were believed to be headed to their work station when the kidnappers ambushed them.

Police believe that they were taken to Somalia by their abductors.

The armed suspects, who were armed, first blocked the vehicle that was ferrying the doctors before alighting and opening fire on the police officers.

One officer died instantly while the other managed to escape.

The militants then bundled the two doctors into their vehicle and drove off.

Nation reported that Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) had already been dispatched to chase after the two vehicles, Toyota Probox cars, that were involved in the kidnapping.

This comes comes just months after another Italian worker was abducted after suspected Al Shabaab militants raided a children's home at Chakama in Kilifi County.

Reports at the time indicated that the gunmen descended on the home injuring at least five people with one of the survivors left in critical condition.

UPDATE: Police arrested the driver of the vehicle that was taking the two doctors to their workplace and recovered a county government vehicle.
