Evans Kidero Arrested Again

Former Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero, was on Friday arrested following graft allegations alongside the former Chief of Staff George Wainaina and three others.

The suspects were taken to the EACC Police Station before being arraigned in court.

In a statement by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the two were apprehended following irregular payment of Ksh68 million by the Nairobi city Government to Wachira Mburu, Mwangi and company advocates.

The money was allegedly paid in two installments of Ksh10 million and Ksh 8 million between June of 2011 and January of 2014.

A member of the firm, Steven Kariuki, was instructed by Aduma Owuor, the former AG Director Legal Affairs and now an MP of Nyakach constituency, to act on behalf of the city council without following the right procedure.

Investigations revealed that no services had been rendered to the County following the payments, hence, the entire amount is said to have been embezzled.

EACC initially submitted the duplicate inquiry file to the office of the DPP on December 11, 2018, and upon perusal and consideration of the evidence therein, a number of gaps were identified that required to be covered by way of further investigations before changes could be filed in court.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) gave consent for the prosecution of the matter.

The evidence by the EACC found sufficient evidence to also support criminal charges against Aduma Joshua Owuor, the former AG Director Legal Affairs, John Ndirangu Kariuki, former Mayor then Nairobi City Council and Paul Mutunga Mutungi, the then Councilor at the Nairobi City Council among others.

They are being charged with five offenses which are; conspiracy to commit corruption offenses, unlawful acquisition of property, abuse of office, dealing with suspect property and money laundering.
