Planning PS Issues Warning Over Census Jobs

Planning PS Julius Muia, on Thursday, cautioned Kenyans against fraudsters posting fake advertisements for census jobs.

Speaking during the launch of the Economic Survey Report outlook 2019, the PS stated that the positions would be advertised through transparent means and would be open to the public.

"We have not advertised any position so far through any channel as it has been purported on social media. We want to assure Kenyans that we will use the correct channels and it will be made public through newspapers," he stated.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the body mandated to conduct the exercise in August, is looking to recruit at least 164,000 personnel.

KNBS director general Zachary Mwangi addressed concerns as to why the census exercise was not conducted together with the census.

"The Population and Housing Census is a one-off activity conducted in the country every 10 years. The census is instrumental in giving detailed information about migration patterns, disabilities and housing aspects, something Huduma Namba doesn't focus on," Mwangi explained.

In an earlier interview, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i sought to explain why both exercises could not be combined.

"The process of registering Huduma Namba is to enable every Kenyan to have a UPI (Unique Personal Identifier). Census is counting people. We are not counting people so this is not census and no one should build a correlation what we are doing and census," the CS explained.

Population and Housing Census is conducted every ten years in line with international standards. Kenya has conducted seven censuses in 1948, 1962, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009. Kenya has conducted censuses after every ten years since 1969.

Kenya’s next census will be conducted in August 2019 from the night of 24th/25th to 31st August, 2019.
