Sonko Faces New Headache as Aladwa Declares Interest to be Nairobi Governor

Makadara MP George Aladwa has thrown his hat into the ring after he announced his ambition to be Nairobi’s next Governor.

He made this announcement on Thursday at the Obulala movement which is a forum which brings together members of the Luhya community within the capital.

I confirm here today 23rd May 2019 in this Forum Obulala Movement that (during) the 2022 General Elections, I will contest for the Governor seat for Nairobi County 047 and I request for your support. My God is able. Amen,” he announced.

The group formed by former AFC leopard chairman Richard Ekhalie aims at uniting and offering socio-economic opportunities to members of the Luhya community, while also discussing the political journey of its members.

The former Nairobi mayor has been a vocal defender of the ODM party and intends to keep the fire burning by returning the county to the folds after losing it when the former governor Evans Kidero lost to Sonko in the 2017 general elections.

If Aladwa makes good his ambitions, he could face off with the incumbent Governor Mike Sonko, Kidero, current Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja who are also eyeing Nairobi’s top job.

The current governor, Mike Sonko will face a stiff challenge as he fights not to be a one-term governor like his predecessor.

Sonko who boasts of the various projects he's initiated has not had a rosy term either with his deputy, Polycarp Igathe resigning claiming that it was difficult to work with the governor.

The governor also has had a stormy relationship with Senator Sakaja with both accusing the other of misgoverning the county.
