Matiang’i Speaks on Legalization of Bhang

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, on Friday, sternly rejected an application from certain investors who requested to set up a cannabis factory in Kenya for pharmaceutical use.

According to the unyielding CS, the government would not accept such things as well as debates that will not have value to the youth.

The CS who was speaking at a prize-giving ceremony in Pangani girls made it clear that he is on a mission to protect the youth from such harmful practices, reported The Star

“I agreed with my PS on Thursday that we won't even respond to that letter. We want him to make an advance and we will seek him out. We must protect our children,” ascertained Matiang'i.

This came after the government, in March, denied ever granting a US-based company the license to cultivate marijuana in Kenya with the claims that Marijuana is prohibited in the country.

The CS’s claims have thwarted efforts by Kibra Member of Parliament (MP) Ken Okoth, who sought to decriminalize the growth and use of Marijuana through the introduction of the Marijuana control bill.

The MP had further proposed progressive taxation measures for the Marijuana industry to boost economic independence and job creation.

Past reports by Daily Nation quoted Simon Mwaura from Hyaquip Kenya, a science innovation company, clarified that bhang is not as bad as people have been made to believe and warned that smoking cigarettes is even more dangerous.

Matiang’i further highlighted that the country cannot be engaging in debates that will be endangering the lives of young people. This was in response to the concern to review the law on sexual intercourse with children under the age of 18.

The agitated CS declared that the government cannot support such kind of “nonsense” and neither will it relent in ending gambling and illegal brew which have messed up several youths.
