A document filed on Thursday by Geoffrey S Berman, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, revealed how FBI nailed notorious drug lords, the Akasha brothers, by turning their best friend into an informant.
According to The Standard, incidentally, the man who sold out Baktash and Ibrahim, (Akasha’s brothers), turned out to be Vijaygiri Goswami, an Indian drug lord, described as having been known to them since late 80’s when he worked with Senior Akasha and another drug trafficker named Muhamad Asif Hafeez.
The Indian came in to help them distribute drugs after their father, Senior Akasha was murdered.
Goswami made a deal with US prosecution to implicate the two. Out of his confession, Akasha’s had no otherwise. They gave in and pleaded guilty in return of a lesser sentence.
In March 2014, the Indian received a multi-million dollar proposal from Baktash and Ibrahim. The proposal included a US government agent code-named Rashid.
Goswami fooled theBaktash into believing that Rashid represented a Colombian drug cartel. However, Rashid was in fact a confidential source working for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a United States federal law enforcement agency.
Baktash and Ibrahim agreed to supply Rashid large quantities of heroin for importation into the US.
Meetings were held in Nairobi and Mombasa where secret recordings were made.
Before their arrest, the Akasha’s were so wired in Kenya that for three years, they obstructed the US extradition request. They made multi-million shilling worth of drug trade and protected their lucrative business with violence, murder and related threats. The court yesterday pushed their sentencing to August 16 for Baktash and November 8 for Ibrahim.
