Kenyan-American law professor Makau Mutua, on Monday, September 23, celebrated the graduation of his son in New York City.

Mwalimu Makau Mutua, who is the law scholar's last born son, graduated with a Masters of Arts in Teaching at Relay Graduate School of Education.

A number of Kenyans sent their congratulatory messages via Twitter acknowledging his achievement..

"Congratulations to the polished young man who has worked hard to achieve an academic award," one user Moses Omolo noted.

Another added, "We are all happy for you and your family especially your son. Congratulations to the both of you."

Others sent their congratulatory messages while the same time taking notice of his dreadlocks.

"Congratulations to the rastaman. It’s a clear indication that rasta is just but a hairstyle," one netizen noted.

"Congratulations to the Rastaman. I am sure he will teach with his dreads. Why can't Kenya's Public Service allow dreads? Why must decency be judged by the suit and tie that one puts on?" George Ondieki posed.

The senior Mutua is known for his hard-hitting opinion pieces on publications where he lends his two cents to critical issues, both locally and internationally.

He is a former Dean of the University at Buffalo Law School. Currently, he is the chairperson at Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).

In 2003, he was appointed by President Mwai Kibaki to chair a task force that eventually led to the establishment of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission in 2008.

He is married to Prof Athena Mutua and the two have two other sons; Lumumba and Amani Mutua. They also have two daughters Mueni and Jueria Abdul.
