Raila Rushes to Likoni Ferry Tragedy Scene With Tough Orders

African Union envoy, Raila Odinga, rushed to the Likoni Ferry tragedy scene following failures to retrieve the wrecked car of a woman and daughter who died after their car plunged into the Indian Ocean failed.

Odinga on Saturday, October 5, who visited the area to be briefed on the retrieval mission was accompanied by Likoni MP Mbishi Mboko.

He went on to command dredging works in the area halted as they interfered with the rescue mission.

"I am ordering dredging works to stop immediately as they are interfering with the operations. The amount of debris emitted into the water affect the visibility under the water," Odinga commanded.

On Friday, October 4, world-renowned Swedish diver, Volker Bassen, asserted that conditions in the ocean were tough and the rescue mission require some more time.

"We are here for a brief on the ongoing rescue operation. We have come to see what can be done to ensure bodies and the vehicle will be removed," Odinga tweeted.

The ODM leader further called onto the government to set up measures that would thwart such predicaments.

"Stringent measures must be put in place to ensure that such an incident does not occur again and we pray to God to grant strength to those affected. The entire nation is in mourning," he condoled with the deceased's family

Diver Bassen was forced to retract his words after visiting the scene.

He had stated that he would locate the car within 15 minutes and retrieve it in two hours.

Government spokesperson, Colonel (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna stated that the Likoni tragedy retrieval mission would take time and asked Kenyans to be patient with the divers.

"Let's be hopeful that tomorrow will be a better day than today. However, we cannot say with a degree of certainty that tomorrow we will be able to get that vehicle out," Oguna stated.
