Likoni Tragedy: DCI Goes After Ferry MD

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has turned its guns towards Kenya Ferry Services Managing Director Bakari Gowa after the fatal tragedy at the coast.

According to a report by People Daily, the MD will be summoned to record statements in an attempt to unravel the cause of the accident which cost the lives of Miriam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu.

Quoting Likoni sub-county police commander Benjamin Rotich, the paper indicated that Gowa was set to appear before a multi-agency team for the statement.

Kenya Ferry Services MD Bakari Gowa is expected to record a statement with the DCI regarding the Likoni accident.

“We are still planning on when he is to appear before us and record statements. We are yet to set a day since we are still consulting with relevant government agencies.

"However, if need be, he will be summoned by detectives to shed more light on the ferry accident,”Rotich stated.

Gowa, however, claimed that he had not yet received official communication requiring him to visit the multi-agency team regarding the accident.

“I have not yet been summoned but I welcome the move to investigate the tragic accident. If the police are planning to question me, I am ready. I will cooperate if I am summoned,” he responded.

On Saturday, October 12, DCI probed the coxswain MV HarambeeAmos Bushuru, two employees of Kenya Ferry Services(KFS) as well as two private guards who were at the scene during the unfortunate incident.

"So far we have questioned five people, two private security guards who were at the ferry on the said day, a coxswain and two top ferry managers," affirmed Rotich at the time.

Mariam Kighenda,35, and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu who were retrieved from the Indian Ocean after they drowned on September 29.
