Television reporters and news anchors are some of the most well-recognised individuals in the country due to their constant presence on TV screens.

While school plays a big role in shaping the career of an individual, not all the great journalists seen on TV pursued a course related to their job description.

Here are some of the famous Kenyan journalists that never pursued any media-related courses.

Yvonne Okwara

Citizen TV anchor Yvone Okwara.

Yvonne is a media personality whose body of work runs the gamut from powerful interviews, talk shows to news presentation; with experience in radio production, presentation to television content production, interviewing and news anchoring.

 

She pursued a Bachelors degree in Zoology, Botany and Chemistry at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

 

Yvonne currently works for Citizen TV as a Senior Anchor and content producer.

 

 

 

Michael Gitonga

KTN News TV anchor Michael Gitonga.

Michael’s career in media started off as an “accident”. The first person to interview him as a radio host told him that radio was not for him. The comment just fueled him to keep trying because he had a passion for it.

 

He went on to host the breakfast show on Radio 316 (Mike on the mic)which he did for over 10 years. He then joined KTN as co-host of the “Morning Express” with Sophia Wanuna from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday to Friday. The transition from radio to TV has been exciting for him.

 

He pursued a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, UK.

 

 

 

Waihiga Mwaura

Waihiga Mwaura is a news anchor, panel moderator and reporter at Citizen TV.

He has won a couple of awards including the CNN Award – sports category for 2012 and the Mo Amin Award in 2015 and the BBC Komlar Dumor Award in 2018

He pursued a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science at Africa Nazarene University.

 

Ken Mijungu

Ken Mijungu is a Senior Reporter/Anchor at Nation Media Group.

He was Previously with CCTV Africa and Media Max Network (K24).

He pursued a Bachelor degree in Law at Moi University.

 

Paul Nabiswa

Paul Nabiswa of KTN/Standard Group.

Paul Nabiswa is a News Editor at KTN at Standard Media Group.

He was beforehand a Broadcast Journalist at the BBC.

Paul has previously worked as a reporter QFM and Easy FM at Nation Media Group, Reporter Citizen TV at Royal Media Services.

He pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in  Public Administration and Kiswahili at the University of Nairobi.

 

Julie Gichuru

Julie Gichuru is an entrepreneur and African media personality. Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Arimus Media Limited, a production house focused on quality African content, and Mimi Holdings Limited, a fashion retail business.

In 2000-2002 Julie ran a lifestyle magazine called Quest. Moving on to broadcast she worked as a news presenter and hosted a hard-hitting radio talk show at Capital FM before transiting to television where she has created and hosted a record number of highly successful news and current affairs shows across a number of media houses.

Julie Gichuru pursued a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Cardiff, UK.

 

Shiksha Arora

K24 news anchor Shiksha Arora.

Currently working as a news anchor at K24 TV and a radio presenter at East FM Kenya.

She pursued a Bachelors Degree in Microbiology and Biotechnology before pursuing a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Westminister, UK.

She did not discover her passion for media and journalism until she was halfway through her undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi.
