Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday, December 11, took action after Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was barred from accessing his office.
The senator wrote to Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka requesting for a special sitting, which would discuss the running of Nairobi County as reported by Daily Nation.
"Seeing that Nairobi does not have a deputy governor as is the case of Kiambu County where a similar direction has been given, serious concerns and questions have arisen as to how the county will be run in the interim period," read part of Sakaja's letter.
"The exceptional situation that has arisen affects Nairobi City County and indeed creates an unprecedented state of affairs that requires the urgent attention of the Senate during this period between two sessions," he continued.
Sakaja wrote the letter after the Nairobi County boss was barred from accessing his office unless in the company of investigative officers by the Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti at the Milimani law courts.
Sonko is facing 19 corruption-related charges over irregular procurement and payment of over Ksh357 million.
He has been operating without a deputy governor since January 2018 after Polycarp Igathe resigned.
Nairobi County Assembly Beatrice Elachi, on her part, stated that the Members of County Assembly will write to the Attorney General seeking an advisory on the way forward.
Citizen Digital reported that the county assembly had adjourned awaiting the advisory from the Office of the Attorney General.
The governor was on Wednesday, December 11, released on a Ksh15 million cash bail or Ksh30 million bond and a surety of a similar amount.
Further, the magistrate ruled that he was barred from appointing his deputy.
