Ruto's Allies Flee After Police Teargas Press Conference

Deputy President William Ruto's allies were forced to scamper for safety after police stormed their press conference, hurling tear gas canisters at them on Friday 10, 2020.

The legislators, led by Kandara MP Alice Wahome and her Kiharu counterpart, Ndindi Nyoro, held the presser at Kilimani Police Station, protesting the arrest of Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria.

Ms Wahome's speech was interrupted by the police, as she lashed out at the government for allegedly conducting a witchhunt against DP Ruto's allies.

"We are here in solidarity with Moses Kuria. He was arrested this morning and he recorded his statement before 12 over an alleged assault. Since then, he was not released.

"As a lawyer speaking with authority, one is guaranteed a bail and police bond when charged with an assault offence. That was not given to him by 2 pm. And now that we know we are dealing with people who are taking this country back to the dark days, we saw it necessary to consult a lawyer," Wahome alleged.

She went on to disclose that Kuria's lawyer secured his release on a cash bail of Ksh 50,000, which was rejected by the police.

"The lawyer served the bail to the police and since then, we were waiting for his release. The court order was verified by them but they still informed us that he will be released upon an order from above.

"We called Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai and DCI George Kinoti, who also had the same response. We wonder what is this 'order from above' yet the court issued an order. Orders from above was a very common terminology during the Moi era (retired President Daniel Arap Moi's regime)," Wahome claimed, and it was at that point that police stormed their presser.

Earlier on, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wa had alleged that there was a sinister plot being orchestrated against Moses Kuria.

"We choose to stand for the truth, we stand with Moses Kuria and we will not be intimidated by anyone, including the two prefects.

“We have not been given any indication of a court appearance or why they are holding him here. There have been whispers in the cell that they intend to move Mr Kuria in the wee hours of the night,” Ichung'wa claimed.
