NTSA Suspends Another Matatu Sacco

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, January 30, suspended the Northern E-Coach Travellers Sacco Limited.

In a press statement by the transport authority, the Sacco failed to comply with regulations stated in NTSA (Operation of PSV) regulations, 2014. 

The sacco had been licensed to operate along the following routes;

1.) Garissa-Masalani- Bura

2.) Nairobi-Dadaab-Thika--Mwingi-Garissa

3.)Nairobi-Thika-Mwingi-Garissa-Bura

4.)Nairobi-Isiolo-Marsabit-Moyale-Mandera

5.) Nairobi-Mandera-Mwingi-Garissa-Wajir-Elwak.

6.) Nairobi-Mwingi-Garissa-Bura-Hola-Masalani-Mombasa-Malindi

7.) Nairobi-Mwingi-Garissa-Wajir-Elwak-Mandera

8.) Nairobi-Nyeri-Nanyuki-Isiolo-Marsabit-Moyale

9.) Nairobi-Thika-Mwingi-Garissa-Dadaab

Members of the public have been urged not to board any vehicles belonging to the sacco.

"The sacco has been directed to present all its 35 vehicles to the nearest police station with immediate effect," read an excerpt from the statement.

Further, the authority directed the traffic police department to impound any vehicles belonging to the sacco when spotted operating.

Earlier, NTSA released a report which indicated that those killed in road accidents this year had increased compared to a similar time last year.

The death toll this January rose to 260 people, compared to last year's January, which stood at 177.

“The most vulnerable category of victims are pedestrians. At least 96 were reported dead this year compared to last year where 68 lost their lives,” the survey read.

Pedestrians were followed by motorists. The survey stated that 54 riders died in January 2020, compared to January last year when 43 died.

Passengers came in third with 53 reported dead compared to last year where 36 died.
