Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, on Saturday, March 7, touched hearts in Migori County after overseeing a fundraiser that raised millions.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the outspoken lawmaker noted that he oversaw the fundraiser which was aimed at enabling boda boda riders in Suna East constituency Migori County to start a Sacco within the region.
The event, which was filled with pomp and dancing, was successful as it raised Ksh5 million to help the riders secure their financial freedom.
"The event was successful. It was for Boda Boda riders to secure financial freedom and I think we raised Ksh5 million for them," stated Babu.
Known for his grand nature, the former University of Nairobi Union president also took to the dance floor of the event which he was the Chief Guest.
This was the first fundraiser Owino had held since his release from jail in connection with the shooting of DJ Evolve, formally known as Felix Orinda.
The legislator had been released on a cash bail of Ksh10 billion before High Court Judge Luka Kimaru halved it to Ksh5 million.
As part of his initial bail terms, Babu had been ordered to settle the ballooning hospital bill of DJ Evolve but Kimaru later ruled that should not be forced to pay the bill noting that it should be considered a moral obligation.
The lawmaker, however, confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke at the time that he would continue paying the bill despite Judge Kimaru's ruling.
By February 23, Owino had already deposited Ksh5 million. About a week later, he made another deposit of Ksh2.5 million as part of his bond payment.
