Rogue Police Officers to Face Dismissals

The National Police Service Commission has vowed to crack the whip on rogue police officers who will be found guilty of using excessive force while exercising their mandate.

On an interview with KTN News, The National Police Service Commission Chairman, Eliud Kinuthia said that they have received files from the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyabai outlining numerous complaints from the public against police officers who have overstepped their mandate.

"We have finished identifying all those cases of police excess and we will not hesitate to approve recommendations of dismissal that the inspector general has made to us, and for the file that has been brought to us action will be taken,'' said Kinuthia.

The Inspector-General of also reiterated Kinuthia's position when announcing hotline numbers that the public can use to report police officers seen to be committing injustices.

''Police will continue enforcing the law and if there are grievances from the public there are provisions for the public to report complaints against our officers for prosecutions''.

The Inspector-General gave out numbers that can be used by the public to report complaints against the police, Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) direct line 020 4906000 and Kenya Police Internal Affairs Unit direct number 0798474619. 

Kenya Police Internal Affairs Unit is Under Inspector General's office and works in conjunction with the Office of the Director Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Hillary Mutyabai referred to a particular case in Malindi where police officers were captured in a video harassing a shop keeper while looting his shop.

''We will not entertain arrogant groups to continue harassing members of the public in defiance of the law, including what happened in Malindi on Tuesday, April 14th. Action will be taken against any officer disrespecting the law as police are there to protect the mwananchi,

''We will consider that these police officers are defying the enforcement directives from the national police service and they shall be handled in accordance to the law.''

On Thursday, April 15th, Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub while speaking at a press briefing, announced measures taken against Crispus Katana. Mr Katana is an Administration Police officer who was recorded using a gun to harass boda boda operators in Magarini, Taita Taveta County. Mr Yakub encouraged the public to use their phones to record rogue officers harassing the public so that action can be taken against them.

"The IGP has ordered the immediate arrest of this police officer and he will shortly appear in court. There is no room for impunity even during this time when all systems are geared towards dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Citizens must keep vigil as they adhere to the directives of the Ministry of Health (MoH).
