Three little girls were on Tuesday, April 28, captured on video reciting a poem outside the Nation Media Group headquarters along Kimathi Street in Nairobi.

The trio is said to have walked from Pipeline Estate to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to relay their message to anyone who was willing to lend an ear.

"Poverty knocking at the door, poverty killed my grandpa, living my poor parents living in deep sorrows. Poverty, poverty, when are you coming to an end," stated a part of their poem.

"Please, set me free and very free indeed," they added.

The girls' grandmother narrated that their parents were fired from their workplaces due to the Coronavirus pandemic, leaving them struggling for survival.

The trio depicts what many Kenyan households have been experiencing in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The virus has seen several sectors in the country's economy affected for example; retail, hospitality and tourism, public transport among others.

With the shutdowns of businesses, some of the employees have been fired, others have received pay cuts while others have been sent on unpaid leave.

In a bid to cushion Kenyans from the projected tough economic times, on April 16, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta stated that needy Kenyans had already been identified in Nairobi and would receive a weekly stipend.

“The national government has also released an additional Ksh5 billion to counties to cushion vulnerable Kenyans. Piloting of the fund will be done in Nairobi," he declared.

The president and his deputy William Ruto previously took an 80% pay cut, with the savings aimed to help in combating the Coronavirus pandemic.
