7 Police Officers Feared Dead After Lorry Swept by Floods

UPDATE 3:15: Two bodies of police officers who were swept by floods in Baringo County have been recovered.

This now brings the number of officers who died to three.

Four of those who had not been accounted for are still missing and rescue operation is underway.


One police officer has died and seven others are still missing after their vehicle was swept by floods in Baringo on Thursday evening, April 30.

In a recorded statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the officer, Moses Iyadi, is said to have died after their Isuzu lorry was swept away by the floods.

Four of the officers, however, managed to swim and have since been rescued. The 12 officers had come from a security meeting when the unfortunate incident took place.

"As they were crossing a lugger between Yatia and Chemoe at around 7.30 p.m. the lorry was swept away by water. Seven officers are still missing," read the statement.

The officers that have not yet been found include; Bernard Sigei, Noah Kipngeno, Frederick Ouko, Victor Omollo, Samuel Nyakund, Tanui Kipsang' and Martin Naibei.

Those who managed to swim include; Joseph Omboye, Andrew Menisa, Kingori Patrick and Cliff Nyakeniga.

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya has confirmed that a search operation for the missing officers had commenced.

A search and rescue team has been sent on the ground including ASTU Loruk, RDU Kagir, other officers from ASTU Chemoe and GD officers from Yatya Police Post. 

So far, 116 lives have been lost to the ongoing floods according to Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, heavy rains that have hit various parts of the country are expected to continue until June 2020.

The peak of the rains is expected to be in the month of April for most regions in the country apart from the Coastal region where the peak is expected during the month of May.
