Residents of Bomet East constituency earlier in the week sought to get the attention of their MP Beatrice Kones and other elected leaders over their welfare.

Keen on making sure their message was heard loud and clear, the locals put up a signage with their grievances and cemented it to the ground in Longisa Ward.

The signage read, "Welcome to the marginalized community where basic amenities are a luxury no electricity, no water, no access roads."

A resident, Kiprotich Renato, who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke explained that the signage was meant to call out leaders who were not perfoming for their constituents stating, "It is a different way of doing it, now that the government imposed stringent measures on social distance due to Covid-19.

"The residents decided to design the pictured signpost to express the long term neglect by both national and county government. The said region does not have any feeder road, power connectivity or water lines," he stated.

Renato, who is a teacher, disclosed that police pulled down the sign on Monday evening May 4, much to the chagrin of the residents. The poster had however already circulated on social media.

"I shared the post on social media after the erected signpost was brought down yesterday evening by the police," he added.

Another resident of Kamaech area in the same constituency noted that the situation was worse in their area where they are forced to survive without water or electricity.

The disgruntled voter stated that they were planning to put up another sign in the area to get their representatives' attention.

Calls by this writer to reach MP Kones for comment went unanswered.

The constituency, together with Sotik and Chepalungu, was hard hit by floods in April with more than 120 families having been rendered homeless.

In 2019, Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok revealed that the county had spent Ksh1.1 billion in the construction of roads and bridges in Bomet East, Bomet Central, Sotik, Konoin and Chepalungu counties.

This figure, he said, had been used to construct 724 km of road network.
