Update: 25 MCAs pushing for Waiguru's impeachment availed themselves at the County Assembly as two MCAs supporting Waiguru were reportedly chased out of the house. Kirinyaga has 33 MCAs and two thirds (22) of the MCAs are required to impeach the governor as stipulated in the constitution.

According to the assembly, 30 MCAs signed to support the motion. However, pro-Waiguru MCAs argued that the signatures being referred to are those they signed while attending a previous session.

If the MCAs succeed in impeaching Waiguru, the case will proceed to the Senate for a hearing. The Senate will then affirm or nullify the impeachment motion.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has threatened to follow every legal proceeding while taking action against Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who are poised to move an impeachment motion against her.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, June 9, Waiguru argued that the MCAs were out to frustrate her administration, despite the existence of a court order halting the proceedings.

"If the Assembly does proceed in violation of the subsisting Court Orders, I shall seek such orders for contempt against the Speaker and all participating members as are available under the Law.

"Their intent is merely to bully me to achieve nefarious and personalized political objectives. In the meantime, I reiterate once again.

"I shall not be bullied. My single and unceasing interest is to serve the people who elected me. All else is vindicated by the Law, the Truth and Justice," Waiguru tweeted.

She also added that the timing of the motion was ill-informed as the issues raised are baseless. The MCAs are accusing her of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct.

The MCAs accuse Waiguru of failing to deliver the annual State of the County address to the County Assembly and illegally confer awarding herself travel allowances amounting to Ksh10.6 million yet she did not travel.

"This is a waste of valuable time that would be better spent handling the serious issues impacting the County, including the Corona crisis," she defended.

The MCAs reportedly fled their homes and spent the night of Monday, June 8 at the County Assembly as they prepared to oust Waiguru.

Several images were shared online, indicating that the MCAs camped at the assembly. Speaking with  Kenyans.co.ke, an insider verified the images that have been shared on social media.

“One of them is the budget committee chair David Mathenge who is also the MCA representing Baragwi Ward,” the source said.

The pro-impeachment MCAs allege that they have the support of 24 out of 33 members of the county assembly.
