Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has addressed reports of leaving Jubilee Party over his fallout with party leader President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In a statement on Facebook on Wednesday, July 1, Governor Sonko shared a report that alleged that he had met with ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and The Service Party leader Mwangi Kiunjuri.
The post also claimed that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Labour CS Simon Chelgui and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria were also in the supposed closed-door meeting.
However, Sonko termed the reports as false and misleading.
“Whoever is spreading this nonsense must stop this kind of pettiness. Despite the ups and downs, I will fight within the Uhuru system and Jubilee until he retires and goes back to Ichaweri,” Sonko stated.
The governor added that despite the strained relationship with the head of state, he would be loyal till the end of Kenyatta’s term.
“I am not a disloyal friend and our friendship is about perseverance. Those who are jealous and are spreading rumours can die,” he stated.
The friendship between the two has been on the rocks with Sonko being thrown into the periphery in regards to running the city.
The governor has trashed the deal he made with Uhuru which effectively handed over core functions of the county government to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
After hand over, the head of state moved to shadow Sonko Rescue Team by launching 22 NMS branded water bowsers and five ambulances for use in the city.
Sanitation points erected by SRT were demolished and its members arrested during fumigation and food donation exercises in April 2020.
On June 30, the governor skipped the celebration of 100 days since NMS took charge of the county which was graced by Kenyatta and Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.
