A middle-aged man claiming to be the husband of the late Ohangla artist Lady Maureen was turned away at Ojele Memorial Hospital Mortuary in Migori, on Saturday, July 18, after he requested to be allowed to bury the deceased.
Osiro Matanda, a mine worker from Migori alleged that he was engaged to the artist for over six years before they parted ways.
He however said the two had sworn to bury one another despite him not paying the deceased's dowry.
“Achieng was my wife and had requested me to send her off if she passed away and vice versa. I have approached the family to ley me burry her but they declined.
"We separated after six years when she joined Tonny Nyadundo’s band," Matanda lamented while speaking with the Standard.
Maureen's family responded to Matanda's allegations, arguing that they had received numerous calls from several people alleging that they were engaged to their daughter.
None of them gave enough proof, forcing the family to turn them down.
"Those are petty lies and rumours. None of them came to discuss the same with us," her brother Charles Ochieng stated.
Lady Maureen was laid to rest at her Kopanga village home in Migori County under the protection of police officers.
Hundreds of mourners were spotted escorting the cottage from the funeral home to her home.
The artist passed away on Saturday, July 11, after suffering a long illness.
