Former minister John Cheruiyot was placed behind bars to serve a three-month jail term after failing to settle a Ksh2.3 million debt.
A report by Daily Nation on Sunday, July 19, indicated that Cheruiyot, who served as the Co-operatives Development minister during former President Daniel Moi's tenure, was taken to Industrial Area Remand Center on Tuesday, July 14.
The former minister was accused of defaulting on the Ksh2.3 million debt to Lango Odhiambo who provided him with services some 21 years ago.
"Upon reading the notice of motion application dated July 25, 2019, and filed on July 26, 2019... It is hereby ordered that the judgement debtor be re-arrested committed to civil jail," read a court ordered dated February, 27, 2020.
In 2015, the lawmaker had been sentenced to a six-month jail term but was released after he entered into an agreement to settle the money in installments.
Cheruiyot had agreed to pay Odhiambo Ksh1 million before settling the rest in Ksh50,000 monthly installments which he defaulted.
While in jail, the accused is set to receive Ksh 60 as a subsistence allowance everyday for the period he will be held up.
Odhiambo had argued that Cheruiyot had been released on September 11, 2015 after pledging to make the payments.
Odhiambo argued that he had printed 50,000 Kenya African National Union (Kanu) papers in 1994 but was yet to be paid for the service.
Cheruiyot was accused alongside former Kanu officials Joseph Kamotho, Wilson Ndolo and Japheth Lijoodi who have since passed away.
He had entered into the deal promising to settle the payment by December 2012 which he failed to honour.
After the Ksh50,000 cheque, the politician had issued a Ksh10,000 cheque which later bounced hence leaving a debt of Ksh565,000. The debt accrued interest of Ksh1.6 million.
