Ousted Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has written to the Witness Protection Agency to have 13 key witnesses placed under the protection programme.
The witnesses will be used in the case pitting Sonko against Interior PS Karanja Kibicho over their alleged involvement in promoting violence during the 2017 elections campaigns as claimed by the former Nairobi boss.
Through his lawyer John Khaminwa, Sonko sought to have the witnesses protected due to the sensitive nature of the case.
"In view of the nature and sensitivity of the case, we request that as a matter of urgency, that our clients be placed under the Witness Protection Programme," part of the letter by Sonko stated.
The letter comes after Kibicho obtained court orders barring Sonko from linking him to the 2017 General election chaos.
The PS claimed that Sonko had an agenda to damage his reputation and character.
He cited that the former governor has been making false and libelous utterances against him since 2017.
His sentiments were backed up by the court's ruling as Justice Mbogholi Msagha issued 14 days order barring Sonko from making the statements until the case is heard on Thursday, February 11.
The flamboyant politician had on Sunday, January 24, alleged that he along with Kibicho, and other state officials, stage-managed some of the chaos experienced in the country during the 2017 general election.
He confessed to being involved in the planning of the chaos with the aim of portraying the ODM party in bad light.
In response, Kibicho recorded a statement with the DCI and threatened to sue Sonko for damaging his reputation.
The DCI also ordered Sonko to appear before its headquarters to give his side of the story. The politician is expected at the offices along Kiambu Road on Monday, February 8.
