President Uhuru Kenyatta made an abrupt visit to one of his projects in Mt Kenya region valued at Ksh1 billion.
During his speech at the venue on Sunday, January 31, the Head of State noted that once the Chaka Market is complete, it will be among the largest markets in the country.
He made the impromptu visit to the facility and disclosed that he would return to the area in February for an official launch.
The President said the Ksh1 billion ultra-modern market which is 98% complete will transform livelihoods in the area by providing a conducive environment for traders to do business & farmers to sell their produce.
The market is part of the two projects currently ongoing in the area with the other being the construction of the modern Railway Station in the town.
The Head of State noted that his focus is on development and the wellbeing of all Kenyans across the country.
Once completed, the market is expected to host up to 10,000 traders that currently occupy makeshift structures as they await the project under the national government to be completed.
The market was commissioned by the Head of State in 2016 and is expected to benefit 36,000 people both directly and indirectly.
The market is installed with a cooling facility to enable traders preserve perishable goods for between one and two weeks.
It is also expected to have banks as well as saccos to benefit the traders.
The visit is part of Uhuru's 4-day visit to Mt Kenya region with the aim of popularising the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
