UPDATE Wednesday, February 3: Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was taken to Kahawa West Law Courts after 5 p.m.

This was after terror charges were labelled against the embattled politician.

The court, which had already been closed, was reopened after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) presented the case seeking to detain Sonko for 30 days.

Kahawa West Law Courts is located next to Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been taken to the Kamiti Maximum Prison, his lawyer George Khaminwa has confirmed.

Khaminwa said no reasons were given for the transfer as the court had ordered his client to be taken to Gigiri Police station.

The former governor is tomorrow expected at the Kiambu Law Courts for a mention where he is facing five counts of robbery with violence charges.

Sonko had earlier appealed to be transferred to Muthaiga Police Station after claiming someone attempted to inject him with unknown substance.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti rejected the request instead directing the investigating officer to ensure he is safe at Gigiri until his next appearance.

Earlier during a hearing, Sonko broke down in court as he explained to the court that he has a new team of lawyers who will represent him in his ongoing corruption case.

Sonko’s new team of lawyers consists of Alfred Nyamu, John Khaminwa and Assa Nyakundi.

During the proceeding, he also claimed he was being tortured psychologically by some of the police officers at the station.

He further noted that there was heavy police presence at the station which was strange, because during his arrest, only one police car was involved.

The former governor is expected at the Kiambu Court precincts on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 2 p.m.

Sonko is facing a number of charges among them a corruption case where he is alleged to have demanded Ksh10 million from a private company to facilitate payment from the County Government of Nairobi.

The prosecution side said they would call 20 witnesses and conclude within 28 days.

The former Nairobi Governor is also facing robbery with violence and assault charges among other accusations.
