Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi has spoken out after he survived an accident that left two dead and his vehicle torched.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, February 18, Maangi narrated that he was lucky to be alive after a stranger whisked him away from the scene where some boda boda riders were baying for his blood.
“Hundreds of unruly riders stormed the scene and set my vehicle on fire. We thank God that we are safe.
"Some riders were shouting tuwachome! tuwachome! (lynch them), luckily a motorist was driving towards Narok town slowed down and beckoned us to jump into his vehicle before he sped off. We left our vehicle with the engine still running," Maangi disclosed.
According to Maangi, the deceased might have joined the highway without seeing the oncoming vehicle.
He also opined that the boda boda industry needed to be regulated so as to prevent such incidences in the future.
On the day of the incident, police officers at the scene tried to remove the two bodies but the protesting residents overpowered them and torched the DG's official vehicle blaming his driver for the accident.
The accident left a new rider and his eight-year-old son dead.
"He left the house minutes after he had taken the breakfast. Moments later, I had people screaming and so I rushed out to see what was happening," Carolyne Chebet, the widow stated.
The unfortunate incident came just days after the deputy governor was arrested on Monday, February 15 at the funeral of the late Cabinet Secretary Simeon Nyachae.
Maangi was arrested over allegations of planning to cause chaos and disrupt the funeral ceremony.
He has since disputed the claims saying that powerful forces in government were behind the arrest.
"Why is somebody trying to drive this narrative that people in Kisii want to heckle the president? That is not true," he concluded.
