Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) on Tuesday morning, March 16, announced power outage in six Nairobi estates.
In a statement, Kenya Power stated that the outages in parts of South C, Langata, Upper Hill, Ngong Road, Kilimani, Nairobi West and its environs was caused by a fault on the 66KV link between Nairobi West and Embakasi substations, which caused the outage.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We are working on restoration of power," KPLC stated.
On its website, KPLC issues a few pointers that can be followed in case of a blackout.
Residents need to first report the outage by dialing 97771. They should also keep clear of lines or electrical equipment and stay at least 10 metres away from power lines or poles.
Pets and children should also be kept away from the lines.
Residents are also advised to turn off lights except for outside security lights which will help the technical team know if power has been restored.
"When power has been restored, please use it sparingly during the first few hours to prevent system overload, which can cause further outages," KPLC advises.
If you have a standby heating unit, ensure that it is properly vented and turn it on before the house gets too cold.
In conclusion, the refrigerator and freezer should be closed as much as possible. The contents should be good for 24 - 48 hours if the door is kept closed.
