ICU Beds Crisis Continues as 26 Die of Covid-19

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday, March 25, announced that 1,463 individuals had tested positive for Covid-19, out of a sample size of 8,976 tested in the last 24 hours with the positivity rate rising to 16.3 percent.

The total number of confirmed positive Covid-19 cases now stand at 126,170. The demand for ICU beds has escalated with 121 beds being occupied by Covid-19 patients. 

From the cases, 1,428 are Kenyans, 35 are foreigners while 802 are male and 661 are female. The youngest is a three-month-old baby while the oldest has 103 years.

Unfortunately, Kagwe announced that 26 patients succumbed to the disease. Out of this, 3 has occurred in the last 24 hours, while 24 are late death records from facility record audits that occurred on diverse dates.

This brings the cumulative fatality to 2,092.

498 patients have recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours. 372 from home-based isolation care while 126 are from various health facilities. Total recoveries now stand at 91,268.

1,080 patients are admitted in various health facilities whereas 3,825 are in home-based care isolation.

35 are on ventilatory support, 77 on supplementary oxygen and 9 are on observation.

Another 81 patients are on supplementary oxygen while 68 of them are in general wards and 13 in the High Dependency Unit.

In terms of county distribution: Nairobi 766, Nakuru 126, Meru 83, Uasin Gishu 74, Kiambu 49, Kitui 46, Machakos 44, Kericho 30, Kisumu 28, Mombasa 27, Kajiado 22, Migori 20, Bungoma 20, Busia 19, Narok 17, Nyamira 16.

Kilifi 15, Laikipia 11, Bomet 9, Garissa 7, Siaya 7, Nandi 5, Nyeri 5, Kisii 3, Elegyo Marakwet 2, Kirinyaga 2, Makueni 2, Trans Nzoia 2, Nyandarua 1, Tharaka Nithi 1, Vihiga 1, Kwale 1, Baringo 1 and Wajir 1.

In terms of sub-county distribution; the 766 cases in Nairobi are from Lang'ata 86, Westlands 63, Embakasi West 56, Kibra 54, Embakasi Central 49, Embakasi North 48, Dagoretti North 47.

Kasarani 45, Ruaraka 43, Kamukunji and Starehe 39 cases each, Embakasi East 38, Embakasi South 35, Makadara 34, Roysambu 31, Mathare 30 and Dagoretti South recorded 29 cases.
