The government has allocated Ksh700 Million in the 2021/2022 financial budget to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System.

The money is expected to jumpstart the first phase which is from Ruiru Town to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

in 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 financial years, the government intends to triple the money for the project to Ksh2 billion and Ksh2.1 billion respectively.

Currently, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has started marking the Thika Super Highway in preparation for the BRT.

The BRT plan integrated in 2015 was in a bid to streamline congestion in the Central Business District.

Two years ago, the Ministry of Transport had given an 18-month timeline for the completion of the first phase which would have been infrastructure.

According to the proposal, the BRT was to have six corridors. Line one from (Limuru-Kitengela), Line two (Rongai-Kenol), Line three(Tala-Ngong), Line four(Mama Lucy hospital- Kikuyu) and Line five (Ridgeways-Imara Daima).

The six corridors required 950 buses. The government stated that they would acquire them from Spain and South Africa.

The European Union injected Ksh5 Billion into the project to finance Line Three of the corridor.

Six years down the line, the BRT is yet to start functioning in the country. However, the terminuses are taking shape along Thika Road where they have been built near the footbridges and in the space between the oneway stretches.

Last year, the Ministry of Transport commissioned the Nairobi Expressway project which connects Westlands to JKIA. The 27Km road cost Ksh60 Billion and is expected to be completed by end of this year.

The NMS also launched the Green park terminus, which is situated at Lunar Park in Nairobi. Last month, the city did a test run for the project to gauge its effectiveness.
