The Kenya Power and Lighting Company on Wednesday, June 30, explained why 20 Nairobi estates were experiencing a power outage.

In a statement, KPLC stated that it was experiencing a fault on the bulk supply line 2 from Embakasi to the Nairobi West sub-station.

This in turn rendered the Langata sub-station off supply.

The Nairobi estates that have been affected by the outage include; parts of Langata Road, Langata Southlands, Phenom estate, parts of Magadi Road, Bomas of Kenya, Mukinduri Kuwinda, Langata South Road, parts of Ushirika and Banda lane.

Others are; Mukoma Road, Bogani Road, Nairobi Academy, Kufunga Road, Fair acres, Hillcrest School, Karen Hospital, Hillcrest Close, Ndege Road, Kwarala Road and Nzohe Road.

The company apologised for the mishap and assured its clients that it was working to restore the power.

KPLC advises customers to report an outage by calling 97771 in case a neighborhood or region has a power blackout.

In addition, residents are expected to keep clear of lines or electrical equipment and stay at least 10 metres away from power lines or poles and keep pets and children away from the lines.

Residents are also advised to turn off lights except for outside security lights which will help the technical team know if power has been restored.

"When power has been restored, please use it sparingly during the first few hours to prevent system overload, which can cause further outages," KPLC advises.

In  May, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) proposed that Kenya power should pay its consumers for financial losses that occur during power outages.

Section 32 of the draft titled 'Compensation by Licensees' stated that;

"A licensee shall be liable to pay appropriate compensation to a person if due to failure, poor quality or irregularity of electricity supply, the person incurs damage to his or her property, financial loss, loss of life due to negligence or avoidable default by the llicensee, provided that the breach is reported in writing within thirty (30) days of the breach."
