Laikipia North Member of Parliament Sara Korere addressed claims that she took two stones and a bag of cement for a project launch after a picture portraying her doing so went viral on social media.

The image which raised criticism was taken on Monday, July 12, according to the lawmaker who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke.

Korere on Saturday, July 17 stated that the photograph was taken during the groundbreaking of a new secondary school being constructed at Sosian Ward in Maundu Nyemere.

The MP explained that the items she launched were symbolic and the image being circulated was taken out of context. She further stated that the school will be the first secondary school in the area adding that the region has been marginalized.

She also blamed bloggers for the circulation and false narrative associated with the photograph adding that local religious leaders had been invited to the groundbreaking.

"It's the builders who brought the items for me to cut the ribbon as a symbolic beginning of the project that will serve a community that has been ignored. The school is in an area that has experienced chaos before and we sought funding from donors and supported the project with money from the NG-CDF," she stated.

Korere also revealed that the secondary school will be called Amani adding that her office had worked hard to secure 60 acres for the learning institution.

Kenyans have in the past criticized MPs, Senators and Governors over the naming and launch of projects that are funded by taxpayers money.

In 2018, Kenyans on Twitter called out Tharaka Nithi Senator Prof Kithure Kindiki after pictures emerged online as he was participating in plastering classrooms with mud in a community charity event.

KOT questioned why the Senator could not find funding for the school but it later emerged that the learning institution was not registered by the government meaning it would be hard to secure funding.

The criticism intensified when pictures showed the Senator used a helicopter to land at the charity event. Most also called out area MP Gitonga Murugara for not allocating funds to build a standard school in the region.

Members of Parliament are given NG-CDF which has played a major role in making sure constituencies have schools that are built to modern standards.
