Boda boda riders paralysed traffic along Ngong road on Thursday, August 12, after they blocked the busy road while protesting the death of one of their own.

The riders, who lit bonfires on the road, were aggrieved after their colleague was hit and run over by a vehicle on Wednesday night, August 11.

Motorists who were using the road were left stranded and took to social media pages to probe what was happening.

"What is wrong with Kenyans, where did they find this culture of burning the tarmac, after that burning, the tarmac will be loose and that is how a pothole is created in a new road," a netizen remarked.

"Traffic building at Ngong Road between Racecourse and Jamhuri, the protesters have barricaded the road," another informed.

Kilimani OCS Muturi Mbogo confirmed the incident to Kenyans.co.ke saying that the riders wanted the road to be marked.

He, however, added that the situation had been contained.

Motorists were disgruntled by the culture in the boda boda industry calling on relevant authorities to tame unruly riders.

In January, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai disclosed that the National Police Service had received numerous complaints from civilians against riders.

The riders were accused of assaulting civilians and in some cases, burning their vehicles.

Mutyambai cautioned industry operators against uncouth and uncivilised ways of addressing issues.

The police service asked Kenyans to report to the nearest police station should they be involved in an accident or any incident in the future.

"All police officers have been directed to be on the lookout to take the necessary lawful action against any boda boda rider found to be taking the law into their own hands."
