NTV news anchor, Digital and Innovation editor, Dann Mwangi, has narrated how he contracted Covid-19 and his subsequent admission to the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Speaking during an interview with Nation on Tuesday, August 24, Mwangi narrated how his family was affected and the role his neighbours played in helping him throughout that period.

He explained that his neighbours, friends and church members would show up outside his house with different items, just to talk to his family and keep them company while in isolation as required by the Ministry of Health.

"They came through with shopping, doing errands, bringing hot, fresh, home-cooked meals which I had no appetite for. We are blessed, overwhelmed and humbled by the love. It is tangible," the NTV anchor stated.

"I was almost in bed all day but I got up and went to the sitting room in the late afternoon when some friends came to drop off some stuff for us. We sat and bonded across the closed windows for some time. I always got drained, went and lay on the couch," he added.

A week after testing positive, Mwangi recounted how his body was shutting down and his wife called an ambulance and the insurance company to secure a bed in the hospital urgently.

When the nurse went to pick him from their house, his oxygen levels had dropped drastically.

“The doctor said that they needed to make some intervention because it seemed I was relying more on supplementary oxygen than what I was breathing by myself.”

“And when they did a CT scan, the results showed that my lungs were affected 66 per cent, so I was basically operating on a third of my lungs,” he explained.

Mwangi urged Kenyans to follow the MoH guidelines, noting that Covid-19 treatment is expensive and being admitted to the hospital with breathing problems is not easy.

“I remember when I was in my bed in the HDU, that's when there were by-elections in Kiambaa. I realized things would turn disastrous as no one cared about the Covid-19 mitigation measures. If they knew what some of us were going through, they wouldn't try that," concluded the news anchor.
