While working as a watchman at a hotel in Nakuru County, all Duncan Kobetbet could think of was how he would find a better-paying job.
At the time of his employment in Nakuru, the 40-year-old was earning Ksh 5,000. His desire for a better life pushed him to constantly seek advice from the hotel clients on how he would register a company.
During an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, November 7, Kobetbet revealed that he finally decided to register a security firm, the Dango Five security services Ltd to kickstart his life as a businessman.
“I started asking for advice from friends who used to come to the hotels and I told them to teach me how to open a company because the money I used to make could not be able to sustain me and my family,” Kobetbet stated.
Little did the former watchman know that his first payment would be the greatest eye-opener that he would ever experience in his life.
"My first client used to pay me Ksh 8,000. I paid the guard a salary of Ksh 5,000 leaving me with Ksh 3,000. The moment I had the Ksh 3,000, I asked myself how much I would make if I had 50 guards. That is around Ksh 150,000."
"That motivated me to start walking from one building to another to for clients. I was even taught how to make brochures," the 40-year-old revealed.
Through his hard work, Kobetbet was able to expand his business in many towns in Kenya and currently has over 200 employees in the company who earn him Ksh2 million per month.
With different security guards deployed in Baringo, Nairobi, Kericho, and Eldoret, Kobetbet estimates his net worth at Ksh10 million.
As the interview progressed, the millionaire advised the youth to create opportunities for themselves urging them that they could start with the little capital that they have.
“I wanted to become a billionaire but I did not have the money. People do think that positions will be available every day, but the truth is that not everybody has the opportunity to get employed. Just look for something that will help you,” the businessman advised.
On her part, Kibet's wife, Flora Wanjiru, revealed that she never imagined that one could make so much from the security business.
"As long as you have a vision, you have a chance of rising from your current state. I used to think that the work of a security work was a very low-paying job,” she disclosed.
