President Uhuru Kenyatta exquisitely veered off the norm and made an impromptu visit to Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD), Kisumu Shipyard and the new Mbita Bridge on Wednesday, January 12.

Flanked by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Head of State, affirmed that the government is on course to complete its stipulated projects.

"You told us that you wanted the causeway to be replaced so that fishermen can earn a living. So, this is the work we have come to inspect."

"They have began but we want them to extend the causeway to rid of the hyacinth that has become a menace. We will then construct a port here in Mbita, and another in Homa Bay so that businesses can return as the country battles poverty," the President stated while inspecting the new bridge in Mbita Constituency.

He also preached peace and unity ahead of the General Election slated for seven months.

"We want to continue fostering peace in this country. During this election period, we want Kenyans to maintain peace as is the foundation of the handshake. As we continue with the journey let us all be united as one," he reiterated.

At the ICD, the President witnessed the trans-shipment of container cargo from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) and took a train ride from Naivasha to Longonot.

At the Depot, he hailed the partnership between Kenya Railways and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for the successful execution of the SGR to MGR container cargo trans-shipment project.

From Longonot railway station, the Head of State flew to Kisumu Port where he toured the Kisumu Shipyard and inspected the ongoing construction of MV Uhuru II wagon ferry, dry dock and slipway.

The construction of the wagon ferry was commissioned by Uhuru and his Burundi counterpart Evariste Ndayishimiye in May 2021 during the inauguration of the Kenya Shipyards Limited.

He proceeded to his final stop in Mbita, whereby he inspected the new bridge which replaced the 1983 causeway. Uhuru affirmed that the Government is dredging the area to remove the massive siltation that has been a hindrance to human activities on the lake including fishing and maritime transport.
