Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, has changed his stance on his commitment to the Amani National Congress (ANC) barely a day after he was offered a position as the Deputy Party Leader.

On Sunday, January 16, during a tour of Ikonge in Nyamira, ANC leader, Musalia Mudavadi, disclosed that Nyaribo was a potential candidate for endorsement as the ANC Deputy Party leader.

“Nyaribo is the only sitting governor from our party. ANC delegates are looking to endorse him as one of our Deputy Party Leaders when we convene at our National Delegates Conference (NDC) on Sunday,” stated Mudavadi while addressing congregants at the Ikonge P. A.G church.

In a swift turn of events, however, Nyaribo endorsed ODM Leader Raila Odinga as his preferred 2022 presidential candidate.

He asserted that he would only take up Mudavadi's offer if ANC stays firm against overtures from Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party.

“In my tour of Ikonge today (Sunday) where I visited Ikonge P.A.G and held a rally in Ikonge town, I reminded our people that we have no future in UDA.

“I hope that my party ANC in its upcoming National Delegates Conference (NDC) to be held on January 23, will choose a decision which works to the best interest of our people and our nation. Importantly, my mind is crystal clear that I will not join the UDA bandwagon,” asserted the first time county boss.

The governor emphasized that the political future of the Gusii people must be spearheaded by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, and other leaders from the region.

“I joined 30 Governors who support the strengthening of devolution and who are affiliated to Azimio la Umoja in a meeting with the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga in Naivasha. Devolution needs to be strengthened so that it can continue changing the lives of our people,” a post on his social platforms read.

The move cast doubt on his loyalty to the ANC party, especially after Mudavadi’s hard-to-get stance on Raila.

Nyaribo took up the Nyamira top seat in December 2020 following the death of Governor John Nyagarama. He will be seeking to retain his seat in the upcoming August General Election.

Mudavadi, in the meantime, is set to make a major political statement this weekend at his party’s NDC stating, “On Sunday, at our party NDC, I will make a statement that will cause a political earthquake.”
