Kenyans are set to dig deeper into their pockets after prices of bread, a staple food in the country, shot up.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, February 8, a representative from Supa Loaf, a leading bread manufacturer confirmed that the price of bread would increase by Ksh5 in most categories.

The 200g mini loaf will shoot up by Ksh2.50 from Ksh32.50 which the 400g which retails at Ksh55 will rise to Ksh60 representing a Ksh5 increase representing an 8.3% spike.

The 600g loaf will also increase by Ksh5 from Ksh80 while the 800g bread will increase from Ksh100 to Ksh110. 1.5kg loaf will also see a surge in price by Ksh10 from Ksh190 to Ksh200.

The new changes are slated to take effect next week Tuesday, February 15, 2022.

The representative explained that the spike in prices has been occasioned by the increase in the price of raw materials, such as wheat, used in the manufacture of the bread.

"You know the cost of material has gone up. In regards to that, even us on our side we are going to, at least, make some adjustments that may fit in. Kindly bare with us," she explained.

According to data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on January 31, Kenyans should brace for tough times over increased inflation.

The overall year on year inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 5.39 per cent, in January 2022.

That was mainly due to an increase in prices of commodities under food (8.89 per cent) and transport (6.84 per cent) among others.

In January 2021, bread prices shot up by Ksh5 for the first time in almost four years following effects of the pandemic on the economy.

At the time, a Ksh50 loaf of bread rose to Ksh55 while that retailing at Ksh70 increased to Ksh75.

It estimated that a tonne of wheat flour increased from Ksh25,300 to Ksh33,000 representing a 30 percent raise.
