16 suspects have been arrested in connection with the assaulting of a female driver along Forest Road, Nairobi on Monday, March 7.
In the statement issued by National Police Service (NPS) the added that five motorcycles have also been seized in connection with the early morning incident.
The 16 were suspected to be part of a gang of rowdy bodaboda riders and bystanders who attacked and sexually assaulted the victim in broad daylight after an alleged road traffic accident.
"Sixteen (16) suspects have been arrested and five motorcycles impounded in connection with an earlier attack on a motorist. Operations continue as we appeal for more information from the public," NPS wrote.
Earlier NPS through Spokesperson Bruno Shioso announced that they had managed to identify some of the perpetrators and had launched a manhunt to bring them to book, asking the public to help in identifying the culprits.
"The matter is under active investigation and the perpetrators identified in the clip shall be pursued to face the full force of the law," read the statement in part.
The incident sparked an uproar from both members of the public as well as government leaders. Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) Fred Matiangi (Interior) and Monica Juma (Energy) strongly condemned the incident.
"I am shocked and disgusted by a viral video clip of a female motorist being molested by suspected bodaboda riders along Forest Road. I have asked our security agents to ensure that all the perpetrators of this dastardly act are swiftly apprehended and suitably punished for their heinous act," Matiang'i stated.
The Proactive and Safety Association of Kenya (PROSAK) also issued a statement condemning the heinous act and urging a rapid response team to be dispatched in order to take action on the matter.
"PROSAK strongly condemns this behaviour and calls upon the Inspector General of Police to assemble a rapid response team to deal with the now many incidents of this nature and further calls for the arrest and prosecution of those seen in the video clearly breaking the law in this particular incident," read part of the statement from the safety association.
A senior police officer attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zackary King'ori was attacked by boda boda riders along Lang'ata Road after he allegedly knocked down two pedestrians leaving them with serious injuries before fleeing the crime scene.
